We made it, finally. Where? To the web. After an afternoon at the Bug House studios, VN came away with a 3-track disc. We have since made the music available at www.myspace.com/votenixon and www.purevolume.com/votenixon The songs are "Therapy," the first original, "Borealis Blues," a spacey jazz-blues complete with Conrad's sax playing, and "Sad is the Day," the blues-rock ruckus. All tracks are originals.
The fundraiser at the Blu' Peacock was successful and tons of fun. Tomorrow, a 3rd of July party promises more fun. Like Dunlop says, "Live to play live."

Well, a bit of recording has happened, and 3 original tracks are now in existence. They were made live in the "studio" but the quality is pretty good (we used actual recording equipment this time). Devin will soon be spreading the discs, currently titled "The Campaign EP," around his school for a small cost (I think its small... can't be too sure with Devin). Perhaps Conrad and I will follow suit.
As soon as the tracks get some protection, we hope to post them on Pure Volume and MySpace, as well as the Blog. Check back soon, hopefully we'll have news for you.

Here's an update- On Friday, March 18th, I played a little with Sammy Leverone from the Sammy Leverone Band, (yes, that's my mother) and Paradox (Devin's father's duo) for a fundraiser, and that's about it.

Coming up- 2 minor gigs on March the 31st at elementary schools for one hour each. We're gonna be a lot more prepared this time around, instead of scrambling for songs at the last second. Should be fun, and my first full-set as the singer, so I hope this works out okay.

I think we're still considering on grabbing a fourth guy- I say keyboard player, but the other guys think rythm guitar. Any comments?

Gig 3 (and other events)

Gig three went well, I thought. Of the 4 times we have played at junior highs, this was the longest that we got to play. The first three, with the Vote Nixon original lineup, only had about 5 songs, and we repeated a couple. This time, we played a full hour, alternating with the DJ for half of the dance. Smells Like Teen Spirit and Brain Stew were hits, but it seems the younger crowd doesn't much like Neil Young or Cream. Conrad totally went nuts, jumping around, headbanging, and wading out to thrash around with the crowd. I wish we had video. We definitely sacrificed some finesse for our energy though. Painfully, I was not aware that my pick was not contacting the strings as much as my index finger was, so I am left with a sore scrape and my pickups and pickguard on my guitar are showered in blood. Pictures when they come.

Gig 2 Redux

No one has told me what redux means yet. I abuse it with impunity.
Gig 2 was killer. Best time I've had playing music. I hear it was too quiet over in the guitar area, but anyway. Yeah. The band was solid. I thank Conrad for the praise on the solos. Soon we will be trading leads. Stretching a song out when you run out of material by playing leads and trying not to do the same thing too much is tough, but fun. Thanks to Devin for playing nice and loud. And especially to Conrad for playing nice and loud. Hopefully we'll get some video up somewhere, since much was recorded. Good experience. Getting the name out. Fun.

This was a good gig, especially for experience (we played for a whole hour non-stop). Basically we played while people were arriving for this union dinner thingy, I didn't know exactly what it was about until we were finished playing. 14 songs, that may seem like a few but when you throw in some awesome Jackson guitar solos it takes longer. It seems that we are beginning to get our name out there more since someone talked to my dad about hiring us for a gig this summer. Anyway, we sounded good and I personally would like to thank Jackson's parents for helping us with the whole sound check and PA set up before we played, that helped out mucho. Ok, well I'm sure that Jackson will write a gig 2 remix or something so watch for that. i'm out

So we practiced for the last time before the gig on friday, we sound nice and tight. We may still need some work on one or two songs, but other than that we sound good. Maybe I'll get do a little audio post at the gig, but it would sound... bad. So just maybe.

Gig 1 Redux

First, what does redux mean? anyway, thank you to the school- staff and students- for letting us do that today. A good testing ground for the new material (which needs some work). Overall, a good time, but not our best. We're gonna get that stuff nailed, believe me, now that we know what we need to do. Next up, Police Ceremony on the 28th, then the Valentine's dance at Roosevelt (hopefully), and it has been voiced that we've been requested for an upcoming dance at Marshall, as well as whenever they let us play over there. Cool. We're working band.

Hey we performed for Marshall Elementary school today during their lunch. They are such a good audience, very attentative and into the music, I would have to say the best audience that we've had so far! We played everything from johnny b goode to teen spirit, I think they liked it. Well the spanish final is over and now all that's left for me is journalism (a surprisingly difficult class) and math (for which I just studied about 4 hours and hardly remember anything).

I want to punch a wall, or the educational system. I didn't even procrastinate studying this time and yet I'm still not ready for the finals tomorrow. Took all day today with Will to work on extra credit and such and I am still here, at my desk, not getting math and then trying to memorize journalism glossary terms (I absolutely SUCK at memorizing). What I hate even more is that all kinds of standardized tests are bull, they are all about money and not about the kids at all. I think the grade of what a kid got in a class should reflect what he knows, not a test where someone could have a off day and they're grade goes down 20%. But that's just my opinion.

It was a lot better than I expected. We ate at a fancy restaurant with good food and then went to the dance. I was sweating bullets, but it was ok because I was having a really good time. I think the dj should have played more rock than rap, the only real rock they played was one ACDC song (Shook Me All Night Long) which I lost my voice on. Will and I tried to get Jackson and Jessica out there on the dance floor, but they kinda hung back and danced to only a few of them. Next time we plan to pick Jackson up and throw him in the middle of the mob. Ok well I had a good time and I hope Kasey did too. later people

I want to remind band members to keep practicing the list we made for the gig. I have most of the songs down, except for the really difficult ones ~cough~redhotchilipeppers~cough~. Devin: we might have to get rid of Suck My Kiss, or find some way to construct a clean version that actually sounds good.

For some reason lately I've been listening to The Velvet Underground and The Beta Band; I think it's because I like them (is that weird?).

Howdy kids! Hey I'm back from my vacation. I don't really want to tell you all about it though, sorry that's just how it is. I will tell you that I had a very relaxing time on the Hawaii island of Kwai where I stayed in a awesome condo that was within 50 feet of the beach and I went ziplining through beautiful canyons and ate very banqueously and took lots of pictures and video clips. LOL.

The only thing I don't like about the trip is the travel. Its a five hour flight, and there is a time change (two hours earlier there). The trip back today/yesterday was very hard. We took the red eye flight so we didn't leave the airport until 10:35pm (12:35 modesto time) and got back here at the house 8:00 modesto time. I have had no sleep. The plane was most cramped. Why am I writing this and not sleeping? Because modesto's cold weather woke me up and I'm hungry since I haven't eaten for 11 hours or so.

Wow, the complaining paragraphs longer than the happy one, I better clear this up. I LOVED this vacation. The travel thing just has me down right now because I just went through it. I really wish I was back there right now, just laying out on the beach listening to Five Iron Frenzy play through my headphones. You can just tell by the pictures I posted that the island truly is a paradise. I would like to thank my mom and dad this great christmas gift.

The Islands Tomorrow

I will be leaving for Hawaii tomorrow, yea! It's the first time I will be visiting the islands since I was very little (little enough so that I wouldn't remember anything, thanks mom an pop). It will be awesome, think about it, Christmas in Hawaii, ooooooo yea.

On the band of things, we had another excellent rehearsal today and have about 4 new songs down solid. We filmed a little visual and Clark should have it on the new official VOTE NIXON site soon.

Despite what Ted says, I though Oceans 12 was a pretty good movie. The guys liked it, and the girls didn't find it that good. Though not as exciting as the original, I thought it kept you guessing like the original.

Two days away from vacation. Academically, these 3 weeks between thanksgiving break and winter break have been the worst, ever. I dug myself in a hole and just now am I able to start to get myself back out.

I have a big math quiz tomorrow, I don't really understand the material and have tried to study the material but my mind right now is just a complete blank. Hopefully I'll get some help before the quiz.

Ok, Chavetta's class is now hard. People say that is you do the work then you get a good grade, but the work is hhhhhard. I enjoy his lectures and everything but his work load is crazy. I know I procrastinate but what other choice do I have when I have homework that's due the next day and the study guide is due in a few days. I'm really torn between whether I like him or not, I mean he's a cool guy and everything but such an ~use an imaginative word here~ outside the classroom when your doing the work.

It's weird to watch yourself start fall behind in classes; but satisfying to be able to start catching up again. Ok, well... I felt like posting. Hope you enjoyed the new pic's.

I'm not sure what I'm suppossed to write about on here, so I'm just going to tell you about some crazy music I happened to borrow from my friend today. It's called "Switched-On Bach", and it consists of J. S. Bach tunes comepletely made from Moog Synthesizers. It's cool, and sounds like Game Boy music. Apparently it's from the movie Clockwork Orange, but I've never seen it.
And I hate the rap song, "Drop It Like It's Hot" by Snoop Dogg and Pharrell. With a passion.

So today our english group went to school (yes on a saturday) and finished the video project in Mr. Mitchells class. It is true; he is the best teacher ever! He came in on his own time and helped us with a project that wasn't even affiliated with his class. That is so cool! It didn't turn out too shabby either. Thank you once again Mr. Mitchell! (that is how you spell his name, right?) Sorry I can't upload it 'cause blogger does not let you do that; I spent much time today trying to find a service that would, even went through a bunch of steps with geocities just to find out that maximum upload capacity is 15mb, arg! Maybe once scott gets his site up and running he'll let us put some video on there (just for awhile though, don't want to waste his space; what do you say scott?).

I've decided once I get some extra cash I'm gonna set up surround sound in my room. It will be so cool; it's gonna kick ass for the mass amount of napster music I have on my computer.

Lastly, band practice tomorrow. We will be doing a lot of research on what we are to play the upcoming gig (not for sure still, but our chances are looking better).

Its a record, I finished my homework before ten. Oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh. I'm so excited, actually more like wired because of the mass amount of caffeine I had tonight. Felt good to rock out and headbang to Brainstew, a song that has caught my attention of late and I listen to it quite frequently, in fact, the sheer simplicity but awesome sound of the riff inspired me to learn the song, in two minutes. So yea, that is how my thursday night is going, just a guy rockin out to Green Day (listening to the American Idiot album right now).

Hey I pulled in another poster, my cousin Ted from Fresno. Pay attention to his posts, because he always knows what he is talking about. He also writes for the Fresno Bee occasionally and his school paper also. It will be cool to get some journalistic experience around here.

Lastly, I'm proud to announce that VOTE NIXON may have it's first paid gig (it also may not, lol!). Either way, I'm very excited about it and hope to work out the details this weekend at a potential rehearsal (my house this time guys?).

I have never heard Vote Nixon play except the pretty bad audio feeds on this site, but from what I hear they will be next Nirvana without all the drugs and suicide and such (I hope!) Originally I had intended this blog to be for band members only, but it has kind of morphed into a the life experiences of the members (we'll, kind of... maybe if Jackson would post more often (jk jack) and if we could just get Devin to do just one post, c'mon Devin , just one).

With that said I can tell you about my day (something I don't do very often): not my day for tests. There. On the upside, I bought season 1 and 2 of Seinfeld. Just what I expected them to be: perfect. I have been watching the show since when they were still making new episodes and I think I have seen every one at least once. I have also been playing the old Quake 3 demo (you have to sign up for an account before you can download from the site). This game would be awesome for Steve-o's LAN parties, I think I will buy it when I'm bored with the demo.

Conrad is bitter. Yes he is. We probably could have played 2 songs like those guys did, but since we didn't... oh well. Congrats to Wishful Thinking for their first place. Those guys are real showmen. Real stage presence.

Anyway, we got up as the first act, and when I clicked the amp on, it started going "YYYEEEEAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHRRRRE!!!!" so I told Devin to set it off, and everyone went wild to his drum beat while I plugged in to the other amp that Conrad thoughtfully brought in. It worked. After getting the volume, we locked into the actual song and it took off from there. The guitar was too quiet, but the aggressive drum and bass carried the song. Conrad's between verse bass lead was solid and funky, the interlude (also alive because of Conrad's bass) came together well, and the guitar lead, while quiet, felt really good. All in all, that was one of the most fun times I've had playing music. 1,100 people are a LOT. But it was crazy awesome. The trophy resides in my room.

The Day Has Come... And passed

So we opened up the talent show for 1100 people tonight. We weren't that bad, had some acoustical issues in the beginning and the volume could have been louder but we sounded good. Surprisingly, once I was up there I wasn't that nervous, I just kinda put that energy into having a good time. Unfortunately, we did not win in our category, out of 2 bands we came in 2nd. This really shouldn't surprise me though, because we performed an original song which the audience didn't know. The other band did a cover song, 1985 by Bowling for Soup (a song which every girl in the entire world just about has a fit over) and a acoustic original song. I was not aware that you could do two songs, I guess they found some kind of loop hole or something. Overall, they sounded better ( should I mention that they had bigger, better speakers and amps? Just kidding, just kidding. But seriously...) and I'm just a little bitter but happy that we got our name out there and played in front of the biggest audience for us so far. I also had a good time, that's what most important. My Dad shot a video of us and I'm still trying to find a way to upload it to the blog. later y'all

Whats up people? Hope you all had a good Thanksgiving, 'cause I sure did.
I've decided I'm not going to write a review of the entire trip, just the main highlights.

Disneyland: fun, but ready to go after 1st day. The Tower was the best ride. sooooo... that's all I have to say about that.

Catalina: This was the coolest stop on the cruise, its very beautiful there and definitely a place I could move to. The mini golf course was off the hook yo.

Mexico: poor. I new it was a 3rd world country and everything, but @$&#! Didn't really like Ensanada, but glad I saw it.

The ship: very nice. The food was my favorite part 'cause of the all you can eat buffets. Open all the time, oooooo yea. Spent most of the time just chillin with my cousins.

So that's all I'm gonna say about the trip. I just finished listening to the audio posts; lol they sound pretty lame! Ok, later all
